5th C: Conception

CONTEXT:

Using the checklist the designer arrives at multiple ideas to resolve the problems listed. This is a very important stage which starts with conceiving ideas, grouping them into clusters, arriving at multiple concepts and finally zeroing in on one all encompassing concept.

SEATX:

Clusters:

  1. Foldable chair: A product which can be used and handled in confined spaces and should be compact at the same time. The product should also be lightweight, therefore, light and durable metal (eg, aluminium) can be a good option.

  1. Advantages:

    1. Portable

    2. Compact

    3. Economical

    4. Safe to use

    5. Lightweight

  2. Disadvantages:

    1. Requires manual effort

    2. Laborious

    3. Immobile

  1. Multi-purpose stick: A handheld stick with mechanisms to move in the horizontal and vertical direction. This could be done through a height changing system on the rod and a self-adjusting stick foot that helps in the horizontal motion.

  1. Advantages:

    1. Portable

    2. Lightweight

    3. Compact

    4. Economical

    5. Movable

    6. Durable

  2. Disadvantages:

    1. Unsafe

    2. Difficult to use

    3. Laborious

  1. Hydraulic stool: As there are vehicles with different heights, the level of the seating should be adjustable. For example, a hatchback and an SUV has seats at different heights. Any mechanism can be leveraged to avail this feature.

  1. Advantages:

    1. Minimal effort

    2. Automation

    3. Compact

  2. Disadvantages:

    1. Expensive

    2. Could be more comfortable

  1. Wheelchair: Since the product has to be movable, it should consist of wheels for mobility. Back support is necessary in order to make the product comfortable and safe. The armrest can be dropped as it would hinder the shifting of the person from the product to the vehicle.

  1. Advantages:

    1. Movable

    2. Comfortable

    3. Safe to use

    4. Portable

  2. Disadvantages:

    1. Laborious

    2. Heavy

    3. Cannot be used in confined spaces

    4. Expensive

6th C: Crafting

CRAFTING: The final concept is further refined against various criteria like the use of material and manufacturing limitations. Depending on the user profile, the designer at this stage creates several style options and zeroes in on the one that addresses the aesthetics concerns in the best manner. The final product design is showcased by creating small scale mock-up models, CAD models or working prototypes. The final product which meets the product brief conditions is then taken up for mass production. SEATX: It is the object of the present invention to provide a transfer apparatus for moving persons: (a)can be used in confined spaces; (b) is easily transportable between locations; (c) transports users in a natural, comfortable, and dignified posture; (d) is easy to use; (e) feels secure and is not intimidating to the user; (f) requires minimal effort by a single care provider; (g) can be mounted on a standard wheelchair to provide a lift that allows the user the opportunity to partic...
